Behavioral assessment of anxiety in zymosan-treated mice. (A) Zymosan-treated mice exhibited significant increases in anxiety-like behaviors in the elevated plus maze compared to saline-treated mice on days 1, 7, 14 and 28 (n = 6 mice per group for each testing day). * denotes a significant difference between zymosan- and saline-treated mice. (B) No statistically significant difference was observed in the numbers of total crossings (open + closed) of the elevated plus maze between zymosan- and saline-treated mice on testing days (P = 0.25). (C) Zymosan-treated mice exhibited significant increases in anxiety-like behaviors in the light/dark box compared to saline-treated mice on days 1, 7, 14 and 28 (n = 6 mice per group for each testing day). * denotes a significant difference between zymosan- and saline-treated mice.
