Schematic diagram of the involvement of RAGE in brain endothelial ECV release and ECV-mediated Aβ transfer to NPC. Our data indicate that RAGE affects HIV-induced brain endothelial ECV release and ECV-mediated Aβ transfer to NPC. Aβ uptake by NPC nuclei and colocalization with the inflammasome markers (NLRP3, ASC) are modulated by RAGE. These complex events affect NPC differentiation into neurons and may contribute to HIV associated neurocognitive disorders.
